How do you prevent squash flowers from falling off?

My squash plants get a lot of flowers but they fall off.  At first it looked like someone had gone out and cut the flower's off and let them fall to the ground.  This is the third year I have planted squash and the flowers fall off every year.  If you have an idea please let me know.

  1. Can you tell if it's male or female flowers? If there are no female flowers the males will fall off. If the female flowers are not pollinated they too will fall. I enjoy pollinating my summer squash. Take the male flower off the plant and dab it on all the female flowers(with the bulb)-or you can use a craft paintbrush.
